The Eichsfeld special landing site is located north of Heilbad Heiligenstadt . It is located about 20 kilometers southeast of Göttingen and has been owned by the Eichsfeld-Göttingen air sports club since 1991.

geography

The Eichsfeld airfield is located in the Eichsfeld district about three kilometers north of the Thuringian district town of Heilbad Heiligenstadt in the Eichsfeld district at 363 m above sea level. MSL directly on Autobahn 38.

History of the airfield

Use during the times of the GDR

Z-37 agricultural aircraft

During the GDR era , the Günterode airfield (former name) was used by Interflug as an agricultural airfield. Agricultural aircraft of the type PZL M18 Dromader and Let Z-37 were used, which worked fields in the area from the air. A Z-37 was permanently stationed in Günterode.

Airplanes and helicopters of the National People's Army landed and took off very often there . Among other things, the following were sighted:

Because of its proximity to the border with the FRG (4 km as the crow flies), the airfield was very popular with the NVA, on the one hand to pick up or bring generals of the border troops, on the other hand to refuel during surveillance flights. There was a gas station in Günterode for this purpose.

Use after the turn

new tower building including social building, built in 2011

Immediately after the fall of the Wall , the Luftsportvereinigung Göttingen e. V. (former club name) the area. In April 1991 the LVG received a preliminary flight permit for the Günterode glider airfield. The aviation license was applied for and lease or purchase contracts were concluded between the owners of the site in Günterode and the association. An unlimited permit for the site in Günterode was granted in September 1991. This was followed by acceptance into the Thuringian Air Sports Association of the German Aeroclub and the beginning of flight training in Günterode. In 1992 the building permit for an aircraft hangar was granted. The building was erected in around 8,000 hours by autumn of the same year. The official opening of the new hangar took place on May 17, 1994. Regular flight operations began. On September 10th and 11th, 1994, the first flight day in Eichsfeld was held and a mobile tower was built. In 1995 more plots of land around the airfield were bought and in 1998 a new petrol warehouse was built and a second hall was added to the first.

In 2005, a 15 m wide asphalt strip was inserted in the grass runway. Since then, larger business jets have also been able to land.

At the beginning of 2011, the area previously classified as a glider airfield was approved as a special landing site. This was accompanied by a name change from Günterode / Heiligenstadt to Heilbad Heiligenstadt . In 2011, another hangar for private microlight aircraft was built and the existing hangar was expanded to include new club rooms and a tower.

In autumn 2012, the construction of another hangar for private business aircraft began. Foreign pilots who want to visit the Göttingen region or Eichsfeld for business or pleasure use the airfield many times. The airfield is thus increasingly developing into a business airfield with regional significance.

In 2012 the airfield was also renamed the Göttingen-Heilbad Heiligenstadt airfield . The name Eichsfeld has been in effect since July 20, 2016.
