The Greiz-Obergrochlitz airfield is a special airfield in the district of Greiz . It is approved for gliders , powered gliders , microlights and powered aircraft with a maximum take-off weight of up to two tons and helicopters with a maximum take-off weight of up to 5.7 tons. In addition, the Antonov An-2 model can be flown here.

history

The first evidence of aviation in Greiz dates back to around 1765, when Melchior Bauer asked Count Heinrich XI von Reuss-Greiz for financial support for his glider Himmels-Wagen . In 1898 Paul Spiegel took off from Greiz in the Wettin balloon and drove almost to Meißen in around two hours . In 1918, an Albatros was the first powered airplane to land near today's airfield.

The airfield was opened in 1930 and normal glider operations took place until 1937 . In the last few years before the outbreak of the Second World War , activities were increasingly restricted and military-oriented. Flight operations took place on the field until 1942. After that he was hired due to a lack of pilots.

In 1954, parts of the airfield were put back into operation by the recently founded GST Segelfluggruppe Greiz and GST began flight training on a SG 38 . An aircraft hangar was built by the Greiz glider pilots in 1955 and expanded to include accommodation for winches and other technology by 1979. After several escapes from the republic by glider , glider operations in the GDR were increasingly regulated and monitored. In 1979 flight operations in Greiz were completely stopped.

After the reunification , the Greiz aviation club was re-established in March 1990 and the disused airfield was reactivated.

The runway was renovated in 2020 and equipped with an asphalt surface. With the first launch, it was inaugurated on June 20, 2020 by the Greiz astronaut Ulf Merbold . Previously there was only one 740 × 30 meter grass runway in the same position.

Incidents

  • On June 28, 2009 an Ikarus C22 microlight took off on a sightseeing flight . Shortly after take off, the pilot reported engine problems. About fifty meters above the ground he made a right turn, hit a tree with his left wing and fell. The 53-year-old pilot and his passenger were seriously injured in the impact.
