Germanic empires in Europe
In a battle on the Unstrut , the Merovingian Franks defeat the Thuringians . It is controversial whether Saxony will also take part. The Thuringian royal family will come to an end in the next few years through flight, deportation and murder. The Kingdom of Thuringia is smashed and partially incorporated into the Franconian Empire , which thus considerably expands its sphere of influence to the east. The exact location of the battle has not yet been proven archaeologically. Widukind von Corvey mentions Burgscheidungen as a battle site. This is doubted by some scientists with reference to the still missing localization.
- Amalaric , King of the Visigoths , himself an Arian , tries to dissuade his wife Chrodechildis, daughter of Clovis I, from the Catholic faith by mistreatment .
- King Childebert I of Franconia defeats Amalaric in the Battle of Narbonne , Amalaric dies. With him the line of Alaric expires . Theudis becomes the new king of the Visigoths . Northern Septimania around Albi falls to the Frankish Empire.
Eastern Roman Empire / Sassanid Empire
- April 19 : The Eastern Roman general Belisarius is defeated by the Persians in the battle of Callinicum near today's ar-Raqqa on the Euphrates . He then falls briefly out of favor with Emperor Justinian .
- September 13th : After the death of Kavadh I , his son Chosrau I becomes the new Great King of the Persian Sassanid Empire . He takes on Damascius , Simplikios and a few other Greek philosophers who had to leave the Eastern Roman Empire after the Platonic Academy in Athens was closed .
- In Constantinople , members of the blue and green circus parties are detained on charges of murder. A little later this is the reason for the outbreak of the Nika uprising .
- At a court hearing, Jews have to take the discriminatory oath for the first time .
