- In the leadership of the Ostrogoths , who laboriously assert themselves against the Eastern Roman army in northern Italy , there were signs of crisis: The Witichi's successor , Hildebad , only ruled for a good year before he was murdered by a Gepid at a banquet . He is followed by Erarich , a rugier who is not recognized by the Ostrogoth nobility and therefore has to resign in 541. Finally, Totila , Hildebad's nephew , becomes the new leader of the Ostrogoths. He finally succeeded in strengthening the will of his people to resist, especially since Emperor Justinian I had to withdraw some of his troops to fight the Sassanids .
- John the Cappadocian loses his office as Eastern Roman Praetorian prefect as a result of court intrigue and is banished to Kyzikos .
