Politics and world events
- From January: During the Gothic War , the Ostrogoths begin to besiege the city of Rome , which Belisarius had conquered for the Eastern Roman Empire in the previous year ; particularly fierce battles take place around the Porta Pinciana . The long struggle for the city caused the actual destruction of the ancient cityscape, which survived the conquests by the Visigoths 410 and the Vandals 455 largely undamaged.
- March 29 : The Eastern Roman Emperor Justinian I is Vigilius as anti-pope against the Pope ostgotenfreundlichen Silverius one; he hoped from this the recognition of the Monophysite doctrine.
- November 11th : Justinian I seizes Pope Silverius, deposed him for high treason and banished him to Patera in Asia Minor. A little later Justinian allows him to return to Italy, but Vigilius sends him to an island in the Gulf of Naples (Capri or Ponza), where he dies on December 2nd .
