Events

Mutinous Visigoth mercenaries under their leader Alaric besiege Rome , conquer the city on August 24th and plunder it for three days . Alaric takes Galla Placidia , half-sister of the emperor Honorius , who resides in Ravenna , prisoner.
Alaric had already deposed his puppet emperor, the usurper Priscus Attalus , as Western Roman emperor.
Alaric's attempt to cross over to Carthage with his men fails. He dies a little later near Cosenza and, according to later tradition, is buried in the river bed of the Busento .
Athaulf inherits his brother-in-law Alaric and leads the Visigoths to Gaul .
