Events
Politics and world events
- May 1st : The 7-year-old Theodosius II is crowned emperor of the Eastern Roman Empire after the death of his father Arcadius .
- August 22nd : Stilicho is the victim of an intrigue: As the son of a vandal , he is suspected of being friendly to Germans anyway , and some senators accuse him of seeking the imperial crown for his son Eucherius; he is executed for high treason , as is his wife Serena a little later . As a result, Westrom lacked a capable general who would be equal to Alaric I.
- September: The Visigoths invade Italy under Alaric and extort a ransom. When the Western Roman Emperor Honorius refused them residence in the Noricum , they besieged Rome and forced Priscus Attalus, prefect of the city, to be elevated to the position of Western Roman Emperor. As a result, Alaric also besieged Ravenna , where Emperor Honorius has withdrawn. At the same time, the Goths received additional reinforcement from troops under Alarich's brother-in-law Athaulf , who crossed the pass in the Birnbaumer forest near Aquileia in the same year .
- Vandals and Suebi cross the Pyrenees , where Constantine III. fail to stop them; they reach the Iberian Peninsula and begin to settle down there.
Culture and religion
- Under Emperor Flavius Honorius , a nationwide law ordered the destruction of all pagan works of art that had remained until then .
