Under iconoclasm (from ancient Greek ἡ εἰκών he Eikon "the picture image" and τὸ κλάσμα tó klásma "the Broken, fragment", this of κλάω Klao "I break") refers to the destruction of sacred images or monuments of their own religion ( iconoclasm ) , especially in Christianity . The destruction of images is an expression of the hostility to images or fear of images ( iconophobia ) in a culture , religion or institution.

People who destroy or call for images to be destroyed are called iconoclasts or iconoclasts .

Occurrence and species

Iconoclasm has a long tradition not only in Christianity (especially in Calvinism ), but also in Islam (especially in Wahhabism ). James Noyes, however, also considers iconoclasm to be a typical phenomenon of modernity and an essential accompaniment to the emergence of secularized states. The implementation of monotheism through the destruction of “false gods” can be compared with that of modern nationalism . Noyes also considers Italian futurism to be an iconoclastic movement.
