- King Ermenrich founded the Sueben Empire in Galicia around the provincial capital Braga .
- Gerontius defeats the troops of the usurper Constantine III. near Vienne , besieged this himself in Arles , whereupon the imperial general Constantius appears, himself continues the siege and Constantine III. beheaded after his abandonment in August or September. Gerontius, originally a follower of Constantine III himself, commits suicide on the Iberian Peninsula .
- With the support of Franks , Burgundians and Alemanni , Jovinus on the Rhine is proclaimed Emperor of the Western Roman Empire ; also Sarus , formerly an officer in the service of Stilicho , joins him. Britain from where Constantine III. the last troops withdrew, remains without protection. In Tarragona , Maximus, who was proclaimed Augustus by Gerontius, remained against Honorius.
