Roman Empire
- February 8: The Western Roman Emperor Honorius appoints his Magister militum Constantius III. , the husband of his sister Galla Placidia , Augustus and co-emperor; However, Constantius dies on September 2nd during the preparations for a campaign against the Eastern Emperor Theodosius II , the nephew of Honorius, who refused Constantius recognition and regards him as a usurper. Constantius' rise from commander in chief of the Western Roman army to de facto ruler had a lasting impact on the later patricii et magistri militum .
- March 25th: According to legend , the foundation stone for the Church of San Giacomo di Rialto is laid on the Rialto . This is considered to be the founding date for the city of Venice .
- June 7th: The Eastern Roman Emperor Theodosius II marries Aelia Eudocia , who thus competes with the emperor's influential sister, Aelia Pulcheria .
Persian Empire
- 420/421: After the mysterious death of Yazdegerd I , who probably fell victim to a conspiracy between priests and nobles, his son Bahram V became great king in the Persian Sassanid Empire . Bahram, whose relationship with his father has been strained, is confronted with several problems, above all with a strong high nobility who have repeatedly come into conflict with Yazdegerd and want his son to be excluded from the line of succession, and the no less influential Zoroastrian priests. Bahram initially continued the persecution of Christians ordered by his father. With the support of the Lachmids , he was able to prevail against the opposing king Chosrau, who was appointed by the nobility . However, Bahram has to make several concessions to the influential nobility.
