- June 22 to July 31: The Council of Ephesus , the Third Ecumenical Council , takes place in St. Mary's Church in the city of Ephesus in Asia Minor . It rejects Nestorianism and calls Mary the Theotokos ; and the Pelagianism is considered heretical condemned. Patriarch Nestorius of Constantinople is deposed. The Assyrian Church does not recognize the council resolutions and splits off.
- October 1: Maximianus is installed as the successor to the deposed Nestorius as the new Patriarch of Constantinople.
- Celestine I sends Palladius to Ireland as a mission bishop .
