- 470 : Odoacer is appointed leader of the Germanic auxiliaries in western Rome .
- 472 : When relations between the Western Roman emperor Anthemius and the strong man of the empire, military leader Ricimer , deteriorate, the latter deposed Anthemius and proclaimed Olybrius as the new emperor.
- approx . March 3, 473 : Glycerius succeeds Olybrius as Roman emperor. Glycerius is also not recognized by Ostrom as an emperor, which Julius Nepos favors.
- June 474 : Glycerius abdicates as Western Roman Emperor and is banished to Illyria by his successor, Julius Nepos, where he is made Bishop of Salona .
- 474: Theodoric the Great becomes King of the Ostrogoths in Pannonia as the successor to his father Thiudimir .

- August 23, 476 : Deposition of the last Western Roman emperor Romulus Augustulus by the Germanic military leader Odoacer - in fact a military coup. Romulus Augustulus is imprisoned in Naples , his father Orestes is captured near Piacenza and executed. Odoacer becomes king of the Teutons in Italy and is formally recognized as the imperial governor by the imperial government in Constantinople . End of the Western Roman Empire .
