- January 18 : After Leo I's death , the six-year-old Leo II becomes the new Eastern Roman emperor under the tutelage of Zenon .
- February 9 : Zeno is made co-emperor.
- June: Glycerius abdicates as Western Roman Emperor and is banished to Illyria by his successor, Julius Nepos , and made Bishop of Salona there.
- November 17 : Leo II dies after only 10 months in office; Zeno becomes sole ruler in the Eastern Roman Empire.
- In a peace treaty, Zeno recognizes the rule of the Vandals over North Africa and the islands of the western Mediterranean.
- Theodoric the Great becomes King of the Ostrogoths in Pannonia as successor to his father Thiudimir .
