Thiudimir

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Thiudimir (Greek Θεόδεμιρ Theodemir , Gothic probably Þiudamer Thiudamer ; † 474 in Kyrrhos (Macedonia) ) was a king of Greutungen and the father of Theodoric the Great . He belonged to the Amaler family and had an older brother named Valamir and a younger brother named Vidimir .

Byzantine sources wrongly name the better known Valamir, Thiudimir's older brother, as the father of Theodoric. The reason is probably that this relatively long ruler of the Greutungen was in Pannonia , while Thiudimir followed his older brother on the throne for only four years and Theodoric initially inherited the heirless Valamir in his part. It is correct that Thiudimir was Theodoric's father. Thiudimir was an Arian , while Theodoric's mother Erelieva was a Catholic. It is referred to as Thiudimirs " Concubina ", which could possibly have the religious difference or an ethnic difference as a background. After Valamir's death, Thiudimir took over the three Pannonian Goths, while Valamir's partial kingdom in Lower Slavonia passed to Theodoric.

In 473 Thiudimir and his son Theodoric left Pannonia and moved their empire to Macedonia , where Thiudimir died in 474.
