Amaler

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Amals were a Gothic ruling family who held the kingship of the Ostrogoths and are said to have ruled the entire Gothic kingdom under Ermanarich in the 4th century (cf. Ammianus Marcellinus , 31,3,1). Ermanarich is also the first historically guaranteed Amaler. The reconstruction of the Jordanes ( Getica 79, probably based on Cassiodorus ) of an ancient family tree, however, is not credible and very problematic. According to Herwig Wolfram , Cassiodorus constructed this genealogy in order to enhance the Gothic king Athalaric (516-534) through the fiction of a supposedly divine descent. The number of generations before this served the same purpose, namely sixteen, which corresponds exactly to the number of the ancestors of Romulus and Remus except for Aeneas , see list of kings of Alba Longa . The etymology and meaning of the name are unknown.

The most famous of all Amalers was Theodoric the Great , who in 493 created an Ostrogothic empire in Italy (which only existed for a few decades) . The line died out in 536 with the death of Theodahad . In the Nibelungenlied , the Heldenbuch and other old German poems they are called Amelungen, ie descendants of Amala.
