Theudigisel

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Theudigisel , Latin Theudigisclus († December 549 in Seville ) was King of the Visigoths from June 548 to December 549.

In June 548 the Visigoth king Theudis was murdered and Theudigisel made his successor; that an election took place is likely but is not clear from the sources. The information provided by the historians ( Gregory of Tours , Isidore of Seville ) on Theudigisel's short reign is very sparse; They do not disclose anything about its origin. Research has considered identifying Theudigisel with the homonymous son of the Ostrogothic king Theodahad , but this hypothesis is speculative; In addition, the Ostrogoth may have died as early as 537.

After a year and a half in government, Theudigisel fell victim to an assassination attempt. He was succeeded by Agila I.
