Politics and world events
Western Europe
- August 23 : The Germanic leader Odoacer rises against the Roman army master Orestes and his son, the last Western Roman emperor Romulus Augustulus . Orestes, who installed his son Romulus the previous year, is beaten, captured and executed near Piacenza . Romulus himself is deposed; his life is spared (he is allowed to live on an estate). Romulus' predecessor Julius Nepos , whom Orestes expelled in 475 , resided in Dalmatia as Western Roman emperor until 480 ; Romulus Augustulus, unlike him, was never recognized by the East . Since Odoacer, unlike Orestes, did not appoint a western (shadow) emperor, the year 476 marked the de facto end of the Western Roman Empire . In the past, this was often equated with the end of antiquity .
- Odoacer becomes king ( rex ) of the Germanic mercenaries in Italy and later receives formal recognition as imperial governor by the imperial government in Constantinople . His seat of power becomes Ravenna , the previous imperial residence. Formally, like all Germanic successor empires on western Roman soil, he recognized the suzerainty of the eastern Roman emperor.
- The Visigoths defeat the Franks in Gaul and are temporarily the most powerful Germanic tribe in Western Europe .
Eastern Roman Empire
- Beginning of August: The Eastern Roman Emperor Zenon drives out the usurper Basiliscus , from whom he fled the previous year , and takes Constantinople without a fight after Armatus , nephew of Basiliscus, and General Illus have also switched sides. Armatus' son is raised to caesar under the name Leo .
