  • Odoacer becomes king ( rex ) of the Germanic mercenaries in Italy and later receives formal recognition as imperial governor by the imperial government in Constantinople . His seat of power becomes Ravenna , the previous imperial residence. Formally, like all Germanic successor empires on western Roman soil, he recognized the suzerainty of the eastern Roman emperor.
  • The Visigoths defeat the Franks in Gaul and are temporarily the most powerful Germanic tribe in Western Europe .
