Franconian Empire

Development of the Franconian Empire from 481
  • In this or the following year (487) Clovis I defeated Syagrius , the last Roman military leader in Gaul , in the battle of Soissons and doubled the size of the Frankish Empire by conquering his empire . Syagrius first fled to the Visigoth king Alaric II , who eventually handed him over to Clovis, by whom he was executed.
  • Clovis moves his residence from Tournai to Soissons . Other Franconian kings were ousted (only in Cambrai did Clovis use his ally Ragnadar), and the Roman administrative apparatus was used to build up centralized rule. The cities of the conquered areas are not plundered, but their income is used to strengthen the country's economy.
