- April 11 : Anastasius I , a close confidant of Empress Ariadne is, two days after the childless death of Zeno in Constantinople Opel to Eastern Roman proclaimed emperor. Zenon's brother Flavius Longinus , who has justified hopes for the successor, is ignored because of his Isaurian origin. A little later, Anastasios married Ariadne and, despite his advanced age, soon turned out to be an extremely energetic emperor.
- The Ostrogoths under Theodoric the Great begin with the siege of Ravenna ( Battle of the Ravens ), the capital of the Odoacer Empire ; it lasts for two years.
- According to the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, Ælle von Sussex conquered the British fortress of Anderida near Eastbourne, probably the last remaining bastion of the former Roman Litus Saxonicum .
