Aprunculus

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Aprunculus (also Abrunculus , Evrouil ; † May 14, 491 ) was from about 456 to 484 bishop of Langres and from 486 to 491 a bishop of the Auvergne in Clermont-Ferrand . He is venerated as a saint ; his feast day is May 14th.

Life

Nothing is known about the origin and youth of the Aprunculus. He first entered history as Bishop of Langres around 456.

The Burgundians lived from about 480 in increasing fear of the Franks and Bishop Aprunculus was suspected of treasonable connections to the franc. In 484, the inhabitants of Dijon sought their bishop's life, so that Aprunculus was forced to secretly flee the city to Clermont at night. According to another source, it was the Burgundian king Gundobad who drove Aprunculus out.

After the death of Bishop Sidonius Apollinaris of Clermont in 486, the bishopric was usurped by a priest whose name was unknown, but who died after a few days. Aprunculus was still able to become bishop, as Sidonius had wished.

Aprunculus died on May 14, 491 in Clermont. Deviating, his death is sometimes assumed to be around 488.
