Germanic empires in Europe
- The Burgundian king Gundobad besieged his brother and rival Godegisel in Vienne - presumably with the support of the Visigoth king Alaric II . Despite military support from the Frankish troops of Clovis I , Godegisel was defeated and killed by Gundobad. As Gundogisel's successor, Gundobad installed his own son Sigismund as part-king in Geneva . Godegisel's family and his high-ranking Gallo-Roman and Burgundian supporters also fall victim to Gundobad's revenge. According to Gregor von Tours, however , Gundobad spared the Frankish soldiers who had fallen into his power, whose number was said to have been 5,000, and sent them to Toulouse to thank the King of the Visigoths for their military aid. It is uncertain whether Gundobad will also leave Avignon to Alarich II. Then Gundobad seeks a rapprochement with the Franconian Empire under Clovis.
- Around 501: Gundobad has the Burgundian people's law codified as Lex Gundobada .
