Godegisel

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The sub-king Godegisel of Geneva (* 443 ; † 501 ) was a son of King Gundioch .

Godegisel was the tutor and uncle of Chrodechild , the wife of Clovis I , and since 463 sub-king in Burgundy . He tried by an agreement with Clovis to become ruler over all of Burgundy and to get rid of his brother Gundobad . Gundobad had previously usurped the rest of Burgundy after the murder of his third brother Chilperich II .

Clovis entered into this trade, promising annual tributes and assignments, and in 500 they defeated Gundobad in Dijon . However, Gundobad was able to flee to Avignon and in 501, presumably with Visigoth help, recaptured the area. He then murdered Godegisel in Vienne and replaced him with his son Sigismund .
