Domangart I.

Domangart I (Domangart mac Fergus), also Domangart Réti (* in Northern Ireland ; † 507 ) was one of the early kings of the Irish-Scottish Kingdom of Dál Riata from 501 to 507 .

Life

Domangart was the son of King Fergus mac Erc , whom he succeeded to the throne around 501. With his father and his brothers he had come from Northern Ireland to Alba ( Scotland ) around the year 500 , where they founded the new Kingdom of Dalriada. According to the Annals of the Four Masters , he married Feldilm Foltchain, the daughter of Bruin (Brion, son of Eochaid Muigmedon), a half-brother of the Irish High King Niall Noigíallach , demonstrating the continued close ties of the Scottish Empire to Ireland. Domangart succeeded his father as leader (whether he carried the title of king is not certain). His son Comgall , lord of Cowal , succeeded him around 507. In addition to Comgall (mac Domangart) he had another son, Gabrán (mac Domangart), lord of Kintyre , who took over the kingdom from his brother around 538.
