Germanic empires in Europe
- Late summer: In the Battle of Vouillé near Poitiers , the Franks under Clovis I win against the Visigoths under Alaric II , who is killed in action. The part of the Visigoth Empire (= Aquitaine ) north of the Pyrenees is annexed by the Franks. Theodoric the Great , an ally of Alaric, tried in vain to prevent Clovis from attacking with a "peace letter".
- Alaric's illegitimate son Gesalech becomes the new king of the Visigoths ; he can only hold Septimania against the Franks .
- The Ostrogoth king Theodoric the Great takes part of the Alamanni under his protection.
- from 507: Clovis I codified the people's law of the Salian Franks in the Lex Salica .
