Legend

The story of St. Severinus von Agaunum has been handed down in two lives . One text goes back to his alleged student, Bishop Faustus von Sens, another text was written around 800 for Bishop Magnus von Sens .

The place of birth of Severinus is not documented. He is described as of noble descent and is said to have been installed as abbot in the monastery in Agaunum, today's Saint-Maurice in the Swiss canton of Valais . The famous Saint-Maurice Abbey was only founded in 515. Severinus was perhaps the abbot of a pre-existing monastery.

According to legend, Severinus was summoned to Paris by King Clovis I's doctor in 504 to heal the seriously ill ruler. On the way to Paris Severinus healed several sick people. In Nevers he is said to have healed Bishop Eulalius and a leper at the gates of Paris. He relieved King Clovis from his fever by covering him with one of his clothes and saying prayers. After he recovered, Clovis distributed alms and released prisoners. On his way back, Severinus visited Paschasius and Ursicinus, who lived as recluses in a grotto in Château-Landon. Severinus died there in 506 or 507. The former Saint-Séverin abbey in Château-Landon bears the saint's name.
