Severinus (Pope)
Severinus († August 2, 640 ) was Pope from 638 until his death.
He came from a Roman family, his father was a certain Abienus. In 638 he was elected Pope on the third day after the death of his predecessor Honorius I. However , the messengers sent to Constantinople to obtain confirmation of his choice were initially turned away. When Severinus refused to sign the monotheletic formula of faith Ecthesis, he was denied access to the papal seat for almost two years. He was only able to begin his pontificate there on May 28, 640. However, he died a short time later.
