Gabhran

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gabhran (Gabhran mac Domangart, Gabrán mac Domangairt), also known as Gabrán the traitor (* before 507; † around 558/559), was king of the Irish-Scottish kingdom of Dalriada from 538 to 558 .

Life

Gabhran succeeded his father Domangart I after the abdication of his brother Comgall in 538 to the throne of the newly established kingdom of Dalriada. He was a grandson of Fergus Mór mac Erc and the father of Áedán mac Gabráin . Under his influence, the balance of power changed in the north of Alba , as he allied himself with the British around 525 and thus overturned the old alliance with the Picts and Skots . With the British he invaded the Pictish territory and gave it the new name "Gowrie". He married his son to the sister of the Pict prince Bruide, who became king of the "Caledonian Picts" in the Highlands in 552 . But the associated hope for peace in the region remained unfulfilled. Bruide unleashed his tribal brothers and carried out raids on the new settlers in the area of Perthshire , which was previously under his sovereignty. Gabhran was slain there around the year 559.

The legend brings him and his son Áedán in connection with Uther Pendragon and the legend about King Arthur .

Gabhran also held the title of Mormaer of Manau and was married to Lluan, the daughter of King Brychan. He is said to have died in 558 after the Battle of Gowrie. He was succeeded by Conall mac Comgall , from the family of his brother Comgall.
