Conall I (Conall mac Comgaill; † around 574) was King of the Irish-Scottish Empire of the Dalriada from 558 to 574 .

Life

Conall succeeded his uncle Gabhran mac Domangart to the throne in 558 . In the time of his 16-year reign of the founding of the monastery falls Iona by Columba , which replaced the older monastery of Candida Casa as a center of Christian mission in northern Britain. Saint Columba had visited him on his pilgrimage in 563, having recently come to Alba from Ireland . It remains unclear whether Columba received the island on which the monastery was built from the Picts or through the hand of Conall. Conall moved his official residence to Gigha . In 568 Conall undertook an expedition to "Iardoman" (probably the Inner Hebrides ) with Coman Bec, the King of Meath . When he died in 574, his cousin Aidan mac Gabhran and his own brother Eoganán disagreed about the succession. However, it was decided in favor of Aidan, who first supported Eoganán, through the advocacy of Columbe.
