Fantasy representation of the baptism of Clovis, 15th century
  • Around 498, Christmas: Probable date for King Clovis to convert to Christianity . Bishop Remigius of Reims carries out the baptism in Reims . According to tradition, Clovis, like Constantine , had vowed to be baptized before the Battle of Zülpich in 496 against the Alamanni if he would be victorious. His Burgundian wife Chrodechild , who introduced him to the Catholic faith, also plays an important role . Together with Clovis, an additional 3,000 francs are baptized. It is of particular importance that the conversion to Christianity takes place in its Catholic form, not to Arianism , as with the other Germanic rulers, which favors the merging of the Germanic and Catholic Romans in the Franconian Empire under Clovis. The year 498 is not one hundred percent certain; 497 or 499 are also possible .
  • Flavian II becomes Patriarch of Antioch.
