Anastasius II
Anastasius II (* in Rome ; † November 19, 498 ibid) was Pope from November 24, 496 until his death.
Anastasius II was a Roman and son of the presbyter Peter. He lived in the early days of the Ostrogothic rule under Theodoric and at the time of the schism of Akakios of Constantinople . He was more conciliatory than his predecessors Felix II and Gelasius I and tried to build bridges to the imperial church under Emperor Anastasius I , which made him unpopular with the Roman clergy and brought criticism from the author of the Liber Pontificalis . Hence Dante described Anastasius as a heretic in Hell . After his death, the disputes led to the schism of Symmachus and Laurentius .
In the 17th century a forged letter of congratulations for the baptism of the Frankish King Clovis I was written under his name .
