- 391 : On the orders of Emperor Theodosius I , Christianity becomes the state religion in the Roman Empire . He also abolished the Panhellenic Olympic Games , the Oracle of Delphi , the Mysteries of Eleusis and numerous other pagan customs, thereby smashing the foundations of pagan belief in the east.
- January 17, 395 : After the death of Emperor Theodosius I, the Roman Empire is divided between his two sons into a Western Roman and an Eastern Roman Empire (later the Byzantine Empire ). However, the idea of unity is not given up. It was only later that the breakup and fall of the western empire followed.
- 397 : With the "De doctrina christiana" (justification of the demon pact doctrine) written by Augustine of Hippo , which was only translated and accepted in the 12th century, a book against the practice of " witchcraft " was written for the first time .
