- May 15 : Valentinian II , emperor in the west of the Roman Empire , is found hanged in his palace in Vienne ; Rumor has it that his master Arbogast had him strangled. It is more likely that he committed suicide because of his own powerlessness. This is followed by months of vacancy. Arbogast asks Theodosius I , the emperor in the east, to raise a new Augustus in the west, but he remains inactive.
- August 22nd : The court official Eugenius , who as a Christian is tolerant of paganism , is proclaimed emperor by Arbogast.
- Winter: Arbogast undertakes a campaign against the Franks under Marcomer .
- Eugenius, who was not recognized by the Eastern Roman Emperor Theodosius I , concluded a treaty of alliance with the Alamanni .
