Boniface I.

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Boniface I ( lat . The benefactor ; † September 4, 422 in Rome ) was Pope in Rome from December 28, 418 to September 4, 422 . His father's name was Jocundus or Secundius.

Life

The aged in his choice and sickly Boniface may have been during the pontificate of Pope Damasus I to presbyters consecrated. He was elected together with Archdeacon Eulalius on December 28, 418; Boniface from the presbyters and Eulalius from the deacon party, but this was banished in March / April 419, and Boniface was appointed rightful Pope by Emperor Honorius .

He tried to restore the disturbed church peace and revoked powers that his predecessor Pope Zosimus had given the local bishops of Gaul . But even he was unable to settle the conflict with the North African Church in the appeal dispute . When Emperor Theodosius II placed Illyricum under the jurisdiction of the Patriarch of Constantinople in 421 , Boniface succeeded in withdrawing the decree with the help of Emperor Honorius. With his friend Augustine he fought against Pelagianism .

The first (imperial) papal election regulation , that in future, in the event of ambiguous or ambiguous papal elections, a new election by the Roman clergy had to take place, remained without further practical significance.

His Catholic feast day is October 25th.
