Kaxgar (also Kashgar or Kashgar , originally Kāš , with the additional Eastern Iranian -γar , "-berg"; old Chinese 伽师 , called Pinyin Jiāshī , ancient Greek possibly Kasia ) is an administrative district in the Xinjiang Autonomous Region of the People's Republic of China . It has an area of 139,077 km². Its economic, cultural and political center is the capital of the same name, the independent city of Kaxgar . Historically, the term denotes a somewhat larger area. The city of Kaxgar was also the capital of the short-lived Islamic Republic of East Turkestan (1933–1934).
history
The oasis of Kaxgar was already settled in the late Bronze Age . During this time, here was the Aketala culture spread, particularly relations with the Fergana spread Tschust culture showed. In the first century AD, Kaxgar was the center of a powerful empire that ruled large parts of the western Tarim basin as well as areas west of the Pamir Mountains.

The administrative district consists of a city, ten districts and an autonomous district:
- City of Kaxgar (喀什 市 Kāshí Shì), 96 km²,
- Shufu district (疏附县 Shūfù Xiàn), capital: Tokkuzak community (托克扎克 镇), 4140 km²,
- Shule district (疏勒 县 Shūlè Xiàn), main town: large community Shule (疏勒 镇), 2486 km²,
- Yengisar district (英吉沙 县 Yīngjíshā Xiàn), capital: Yengisar municipality (英吉沙 镇), 4300 km²,
- District Poskam (泽普 县 Zépǔ Xiàn), main town: large municipality Zepu (泽普 镇), 923 km²,
- Yarkant district (莎车 县 Shāchē Xiàn), main town: Shache municipality (莎车 镇), 7960 km²,
- Kargilik district (叶城县 Yèchéng Xiàn), capital: Kargilik municipality (喀格勒克 镇), 29,268 km²,
- Makit district (麦盖提 县 Màigàití Xiàn), capital: Makit municipality (麦盖提 镇), 10,256 km²,
- District of Yopurga (岳普湖县 Yuèpǔhú Xiàn), capital: Greater municipality of Yopurga (岳普 湖镇), 2703 km²,
- Circle Peyziwat County (伽师县Jiashi Xiàn), capital: greater community Barin (巴仁镇), km² 6667,
