Werner sundermann

Werner Sundermann (born December 22, 1935 in Thale ; † October 12, 2012 in Berlin ) was a German Iranist .

Life

Sundermann attended school in his native Thale until 1954, after which he studied Iranian Studies with Heinrich Junker and Bozorg Alavi and Arabic studies with Heinrich Simon at the Humboldt University in Berlin . In 1963 he was with the dissertation Sasanian ruler legitimacy and its terms to Dr. phil. PhD . Since Sundermann did not want to join the SED , he could no longer work at the university and subsequently worked in the Turfan research group of the Academy of Sciences of the GDR . There he was in 1984 with the Dissertation B Studies on the history and value of historiographical traditions of the Manicheans with special consideration of the Iranian traditions on Dr. sc. phil. PhD.

In 1985 Sundermann became a corresponding member of the Istituto italiano per il Medio ed Estremo Oriente in Rome, in 1988 a corresponding member of the North Rhine-Westphalian Academy of Sciences and 1989 foreign member of the Danish Academy of Sciences . After the political change in the GDR in 1990 he became a member of the Academia Europaea and honorary lecturer at the Humboldt University. In 1991 he was elected a corresponding member of the British Academy . From 1992 Sundermann was honorary professor at the Free University of Berlin and from 1993 head of the Turfan Research Group. Sundermann was an extraordinary member of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences . Since 2003 he has also been a corresponding member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences . In 1994 he was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Bologna .
