Byzantine Empire
- Emperor Justinian I de facto abolishes the old Roman office of consul , even if the following rulers will hold this office for a few days for a few days when the government takes office.
- Belisarius takes command of the Eastern Roman troops in the Roman-Persian War against the Sassanids under Chosrau I.
Germanic empires in Europe
- Totila proclaims himself the new king of the Ostrogoths in Pavia . He then begins the Second Gothic War and besieged Florence without being able to take it.
- The Frankish campaign against the Visigoths , in the course of which Pamplona was captured but Saragossa withstood a siege, is broken off without result.
Disasters
- The Justinian plague that broke out in the eastern Mediterranean is also spreading in Europe. The pandemic shakes Constantinople and large parts of the empire. In the following four months, 100,000 of the almost 400,000 citizens of the capital die. Few of the sick survive, including Justinian I.
