Anicius Faustus Albinus Basilius
Anicius Faustus Albinus Basilius (also Flavius Basilius iunior ) was a patricius and the last Roman consul .
Basilius was a Western Roman senator and belonged on his father's side to the old aristocratic family of the Decier , on his mother's side to that of the Anicier . He was probably the son of Albinus , who had been consul in 493, and the grandson of the consul of 480, Caecina Decius Maximus Basilius . In 541, Basil was the last non-emperor to serve as an ordinary consul ( consul ordinarius ). In 542 the office was de facto abolished by Emperor Justinian I : simply no new consuls were appointed. According to Basil's consulate, it was dated to 565 ( post consulatum Basilii ), then to 641 after that of the respective emperors - until Herakleios , the rulers nominally took over the consulate for a few days at the beginning of their reign.
According to his preserved consular piptych , Basilius 541 came domesticorum (thus also vir illustris ) and patricius . In 546 Basil was in Rome . He fled Rome with Bessas, a patrician and imperial army master , when the Ostrogoth king Totila conquered the city again, and went to Constantinople with other Roman aristocrats .
