Hildebad
Hildebad ( Ildibad or Heldebadus ) († 541 ) was an Ostrogothic king .
Hildebad was a nephew of the Visigoth king Theudis . When the previous Ostrogoth king Witigis was captured by the Eastern Roman general Belisarius in Ravenna in May 540 and brought to Constantinople (see Gothic War ), those Ostrogoths who refused to accept the defeat rose on the advice of Uraias, a Goth leader and nephew des Witigis, after a while Hildebad became her new king.
Hildebad did not even rule for a year until he was murdered by a Gepid on a palace banquet . His direct successor was Erarich , who was also only able to rule for a few months. He was followed by Hildebad's nephew Totila , the last important Ostrogoth king. In literary terms, he is one of the heroes in Felix Dahn's novel A Battle for Rome .
