Politics and world events
- May 18 : Pope John I dies in Ravenna , a few days after he was imprisoned by Theodoric the Great, king of the Ostrogoths , as a result of imprisonment. The reason for the imprisonment was that Johannes' trip to Constantinople , where he was commissioned by Theodoric to persuade Emperor Justin I to adopt a policy that was more Arian-friendly , had failed.
- August 30th : Theodoric the Great dies, his ten-year-old grandson Athalaric succeeds under the reign of his mother Amalasuntha . The Ostrogoth empire is severely weakened by Theodoric's death and is conquered by Ostrom a few years later . The Ostrogothic allies Burgundy and Thuringia soon fall to the Franks .
- Roman-Persian Wars : The fighting between the Eastern Roman Empire and the Persians flared up again because Kavadh I wanted to enforce the Zoroastrian religion in Christian Iberia (today's Georgia ) .

- July 12 : Felix III. becomes Bishop of Rome as the successor to John I , who died on May 18th in the custody of the Ostrogoth king Theodoric .
Disasters
- May 20 : An earthquake in Antioch in Syria kills at least 250,000 people and destroys almost all buildings in the city. After the earthquake, a fire follows, which destroys the remaining houses and above all the main church of the city, the "Great Church" with its golden dome, built by Constantine I. Also Seleucia Pieria , the port of the city, reportedly destroyed. The earthquake handed down by various historians is one of the most severe earthquakes documented. There will be aftershocks until May 29th .
- May 29th and 30th : The Illyrian city Lychnidos on Lake Ohrid is completely destroyed by an earthquake , many people perish.
