- May 19 : The approach of the Vandal King Hilderich to the Eastern Roman Empire leads to its overthrow by the "National Party" under Gelimer , who becomes the new king. Justinian I refused to recognize the new government and a little later took the coup as an occasion for an invasion.
- Godomar II , king of the Burgundians , allies himself with Amalasuntha , regent of the Ostrogoths , to protect against the Franks .
- The city of Justiniana Prima is founded in the prefecture of Illyria .
- Constantinople has around 500,000 inhabitants, Rome around 100,000 (in the Middle Ages only 20,000).

Religion and culture
- September 22nd : Boniface II , a Goth born in Rome , becomes Pope. The majority of the Roman clergy elects Dioskur to be the antipope, who dies after 22 days. Since Boniface then forces the supporters of his opponent to admit their "mistake", Dioskur is traditionally counted among the (illegitimate) antipopes. Boniface confirmed during his pontificate , the decisions on the condemnation of Pelagianism and Semipelagianism that at the Council of Orange in 529 have been caught.
