The image of grace from Etzelsbach: Mary with the dead son

The pilgrimage chapel of St. Mariä Himmelfahrt Etzelsbach is located between Steinbach and Hundeshagen in Eichsfeld, Thuringia .

history

The field name Etzelsbach was derived from the Old High German name for Elster - agaza . The former settlement area Etzelsbach is listed for the first time in the damage register of the Beuren monastery : ... Item 7 guilders before 1 bells to Etzelsbach of 1 hundredweight. Item also our Liben women's kerchen at Etzelßpache and the brother's hatred doran and the cluße uffin Langen Stucken torn, is not buzzed.

It can therefore be assumed that a church or a pilgrimage chapel already existed here in the 15th century. Due to the events in May 1525, the pilgrimage was stopped and only reappeared with the Eichsfeld plague year 1555.

From 1602 a portable altar was used, as the chapel was still badly damaged. Not until 1801 was a new chapel built on the site of the old one. But since the pilgrimage was very popular and the chapel could not contain the stream of pilgrims , the church, which still exists today, was built and consecrated in 1898 according to the plans of the Franciscan Paschalis Gratze .

Pilgrimages

Etzelsbach has a long tradition of pilgrimage. The annual “ horse pilgrimage ”, which takes place on the second Sunday after the Visitation of the Virgin Mary , attracts many pilgrims and their horses. All horses brought by the pilgrims will be blessed after the pilgrimage high mass. Other traditional pilgrimage dates are:

Vespers of Mary with Pope Benedict XVI.

Vespers of Mary with Pope Benedict in Etzelsbach

During the Pope's visit to Germany in 2011 , the pilgrimage chapel was a stop for Benedict XVI on September 23 . There he celebrated a Marian Vespers with 90,000 pilgrims in a field in the immediate vicinity of the chapel . The visit should be a sign of thanks for the Eichsfelder who remained true to their faith under two dictatorships.

legend

On the right side of the aisle of the pilgrimage chapel is a wooden pietà from the 16th century. According to legend, she was found while working in the surrounding fields, when the farmer's horses stopped and did not move even after being urged. While looking for the reason, he allegedly came across the image of grace . This is also said to have been the reason why a new chapel was built in 1801. The tradition of the “ horse pilgrimage ” can also be traced back to this legend.
