The Markersbach Viaduct is a railway bridge at kilometer 16 of the Annaberg-Buchholz-Schwarzenberg railway line in the municipality of Raschau-Markersbach in the Saxon Ore Mountains District .

description

Markersbach Viaduct in winter (2015)

The 36.5 m high and 236.5 m long scaffolding pier viaduct was built between 1887 and 1889 under the direction of the secret government councilor Claus Koepcke and the engineer Hans Manfred Krüger to cross a side valley of the Große Mittweida .

The lightweight construction - steel structure includes eight trapezoidal frame pillars and nine holes, four meters to 20, three to 12.5 m and two 25 m. The bridge weight is 534 tons. In its appearance, the bridge is based on American models. The tracks lie on lattice girders with a curved lower chord and are supported by diagonally braced steel framework supports. The bridge was built in the Königin-Marien-Hütte in Cainsdorf . Because of her appearance, she was christened Matchstick Bridge by the population . In structural terms, it is referred to as a fish belly girder bridge .

Current usage

Since passenger traffic on this railway line was discontinued on September 27, 1997, mostly only a few special trains have passed the Markersbach Viaduct. In 2002 the Erzgebirgsbahn took over the Annaberg-Buchholz-Schwarzenberg railway line as a new railway infrastructure company and thus took over the maintenance of the viaduct.

The bridge was comprehensively restored in stages between 2003 and 2009, sandblasted and given new rust protection and paint.

The permissible speed on the structure is 40 km / h.
