The Chemnitz Süd station is a train station in Chemnitz in Saxony . The station used to be of greater importance, especially in freight traffic.

location

The wedge station Chemnitz Süd is located in the northeast corner of the Chemnitz district of Altchemnitz . The Dresden – Werdau railway forms the northern part of the station and the Chemnitz – Adorf railway line forms the southern part.

history

Surname

The station already had three different names during its operation, in detail these were:

  • until January 31, 1905: Altchemnitz station
  • From February 1, 1905: Chemnitz Süd station
  • from 1953: Karl-Marx-Stadt Süd station
  • from 1990: Chemnitz Süd station

business

The station was not built until the Chemnitz-Adorf railway line opened in 1875 by the Chemnitz-Aue-Adorfer Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft (CAAE). In the course of the Chemnitz – Zwickau section of the line from Dresden to Werdau, which was opened in 1858, no station had yet been set up. Since the CAAE not their railway line to the station Chemnitz - from 1 May 1904 as Chemnitz Central Station called - could lead, was a private station in Altchemnitz. A connecting track was set up for freight traffic, and travelers had to walk the approx. 2 km distance to Chemnitz train station. Only after the nationalization of the CAAE in the summer of 1876 were the passenger trains continued to Chemnitz station.

The Stollberg – Chemnitz section of the Zwönitz – Chemnitz Süd railway line (Würschnitztalbahn), which was opened on October 1, 1895, was also integrated into the station, making the station even more important for traffic.

Since the numerous road crossings between the stations in Chemnitz and Kappel that were not level with each other represented a growing obstacle to traffic, the route was fundamentally changed between 1903 and 1909 and the railway line was lowered or raised. In this context, the old passenger platforms at route kilometers 2.47 of the Chemnitz – Aue – Adorf railway line were abandoned and new passenger transport systems were installed at route kilometers 1.99. Since then, passenger trains on the Dresden – Werdau railway have also stopped in Chemnitz Süd. In connection with the renovation work, a new reception building was also built in a wedge location .

The Chemnitz Süd Gbf operations center was created on June 1, 1920 when the freight facility was outsourced from the Chemnitz Süd railway station, as the station's transport services continued to increase. The freight transport facilities were again extensively expanded in 1924. A new goods shed was built with eight sloping butt tracks called “teeth”.

At the end of the Second World War, large parts of the two offices were destroyed by Allied air raids in 1945. a. the goods shed and the old station building. The new station building and the platform tracks were only slightly damaged.

After 40 years of operation, the two offices were merged again on June 1, 1960 to form the Karl-Marx-Stadt Süd station. On May 30, 1965, the electrified section between Karl-Marx-Stadt Hilbersdorf and Zwickau of the Dresden – Werdau railway, which also affected tracks 1 and 2 of the south station, was opened.

Due to the economic effects of the turnaround and the associated decrease in traffic, the importance of the station decreased. From 1995 onwards, operations were no longer carried out all day and in 1996 ticket issuance was closed. Numerous freight tracks were initially closed and later completely removed. The railway maintenance office was dissolved on July 1, 1993, the V3 signal box was closed on November 25, 2005 and the W1 signal box on September 27, 2009. The B2 signal box was converted into the B1 signal box in 2009. The reception building served as a concert and event venue at that time. An auction was planned for spring 2013. Some connecting railways began in the station, which have now been closed.

On December 16, 2002 the railway line to Stollberg / Erzgeb. opened as a pilot route (level 0) of the Chemnitz model . Since then, the trains from Chemnitz main station to Stollberg no longer run on tracks 3 and 4 of the CA line at Chemnitz Süd station , but via the central stop to the Altchemnitz stop on tram tracks in Annaberger Straße. In May 2016, the platform roof on tracks 3 and 4 of the CA line was demolished. Since this is a monument, the roof was stored. In the course of the introduction of stage 2 of the Chemnitz model by 2019, a new tram line was built in 2017 from Stadlerplatz near the Chemnitz Süd train station via the Chemnitz University of Technology to Technopark Chemnitz. As a preparatory measure for integrating this new route into the existing railway line to Aue , the Chemnitz – Adorf railway line between the Chemnitz Süd and Aue (Sachs) operations was closed from September 15, 2018 , and replacement rail services are expected to be set up until the timetable change in December 2019. Since then, the entrances to tracks 3 and 4 of the CA line in the station building of Chemnitz Süd station have been closed and only the northern tracks 1 and 2 of the Dresden – Werdau railway line are in operation.
