Atlantis is a district of Cape Town in the Western Cape Province of South Africa . It was built for Coloreds in the 1970s and has numerous industrial operations.

In 2011 Atlantis had 67,491 inhabitants, around 85% of whom were colored. Dassenberg , which is not an official district , also belongs to Atlantis . Atlantis is the northernmost district of the metropolitan municipality City of Cape Town and is located around 40 kilometers north of the center of Cape Town. The Atlantic Ocean to the west is about ten kilometers away. In the south of the district is the extensive Atlantis Industrial Area . Between Atlantis and the ocean that lies dunes Atlantis Dunes , where sand boarding can be operated.

history

Atlantis was built in the 1970s as a housing estate for Coloreds under the Group Areas Act ; in addition, industrial areas were established. From 1979 the plant of Atlantis Diesel Engines was operated, in which Daimler-Benz manufactured diesel engines for the South African market, including vehicles of the South African Defense Force like SAMIL Trucks . In 2013, a factory of the Chinese company Hisense opened, producing televisions.

Economy and Transport

Atlantis is a focus of the production of wind turbines and other devices for the use of renewable energies and is therefore also known as the Greentech hub (German: “Center of Ecological Technology ”). Official recognition was requested for 2017. The Ankerlig gas turbine power plant is located in the industrial area.

The trunk road R27 leads west past Atlantis from the center of Cape Town northwards to Velddrif . The R304, which starts in Stellenbosch , and the R307 run through Atlantis. several industrial companies are served in rail freight transport.
