The Ankerlig power plant is a gas turbine power plant operated by the state-owned South African energy supplier Eskom with an installed capacity of 1,338 GW in the Western Cape Province . The power plant area is located in the Atlantis Industrial Township , around 40 kilometers north of Cape Town's city center .
The name is derived from the proverb om die anker te lig in Afrikaans , which as a metaphor roughly expresses the need to free oneself from the shackle of poverty while turning to prosperity.
When it went into operation, the plant initially consisted of four gas turbines with a nominal output of 149.2 MW. At the end of 2007, in a second phase that ended in 2009, another five gas turbines with 148.3 MW each were installed. The power plant is designed for the combustion of heating oil , but can be converted to firing with natural gas if necessary . As part of this option, the conversion into a gas and steam combined cycle power plant ( Combined Cycle Gas Turbine-CCGT ) was examined. Electricity is fed into the South African extra-high voltage network via a 400 kV line to the Omega substation further south .
