Joseph Mulrey McIntyre (born December 31, 1972 in Needham , Massachusetts ) is an American singer , songwriter , musical performer and actor . He was best known as the youngest member of the pop group New Kids on the Block , which was celebrated as a pop phenomenon around the world in the late 1980s and early 1990s . After the band's temporary separation in 1994, McIntyre focused on solo projects, which included his own music albums, stage engagements in Broadway and off-Broadway musicals, and roles in film and television. He attracted attention in 2004 in the lead role of Fiyero in Wicked - The Witches of Oz . Since the reunification in 2008, McIntyre has been active again as a member of the New Kids on the Block.

Career in the music business

The son of bricklayer and trade unionist Thomas and his wife Katherine McIntyre was born the youngest of nine children and grew up with his siblings Judy, Alice, Susan, Tricia, Carol, Jean, Kate and Tommy in Jamaica Plain, a borough of Boston . His Catholic parents are of Irish-American descent. From an early age, from 1981 to 1983, McIntyre appeared in America's oldest community theater, The Footlight Club, in various theater productions, including starring in Lionel Bart's musical Oliver! . At the same time he attended the Catholic Memorial High School in West Roxbury.

In the summer of 1985, at the age of twelve, McIntyre became the youngest member of the pop group New Kids on the Block , which was one of the most popular and highly paid entertainers in the world in the late 1980s and early 1990s. The success took McIntyre to numerous countries in the USA , Europe , Australia and Asia . Almost fifteen years after their last public appearance together, they reunited in 2008, during which the group released a new album, The Block , and has since been touring the USA and Europe regularly.

Solo career

In 1999 McIntyre released his first solo album Stay the Same on Columbia Records , which achieved gold status in the United States . In the same year he recorded the song Remember Me for the film Southie - Terror in South Boston , in which his bandmate Donnie Wahlberg acted as the leading actor. The song was part of the accompanying film soundtrack. In collaboration with singer and producer Emanuel Kiriakou, the studio album Meet Joe Mac (2001) and the live album One Too Many (2002), which were recorded during a concert in New York, were created. By 8:09 , another studio album joined of 2004. In 2006 McIntyre released newly sung classics from the time of the big bands on his fifth album Talk to Me , in 2009 Here We Go Again appeared on iTunes as the sixth album and the single of the same name.

A year after the New Kids on the Block split, McIntyre appeared in 1995 with the Gloucester Stage Company in Barking Sharks , an off-Broadway musical by playwright Israel Horovitz . In the lead role in the three-actor musical Tick, Tick ... BOOM! he acted from October to December 2001 in the Jane Street Theater in New York City, in the category "Outstanding Off Broadway Musical" the performance received the Outer Critics Circle Award 2001. From January to February 2002 the ensemble performed in South Korea, from May to June 2003 at the Wilbur Theater in Boston. In September of that year, McIntyre sang in Richard Rodgers ' and Lorenz Hart's musical Babes in Arms in Los Angeles .

In 2004 McIntyre got an engagement as the male lead actor Fiyero in Stephen Schwartz 'musical Wicked - The Witches of Oz , replacing Norbert Leo Butz as the original cast of the premiere. McIntyre worked alongside Idina Menzel in the Gershwin Theater on Broadway in New York until January 2005 and received the Broadway Audience Award in the “Favorite Male Replacement” category. In 2006, McIntyre took on the lead role of Fonzie in the musical production of the comedy series Happy Days, set in the 1950s and 1960s at the Falcon Theater in Los Angeles .

Movie and TV

Directed by Michael Ritchie , McIntyre played the role of Matt Hucklebee in 1995 alongside Joel Gray and Jean Louisa Kelly in a film adaptation of the musical The Fantasticks , which is considered to be the longest running musical in the world. In season three of the high school series Boston Public , McIntyre took on the role of the young teacher Colin Flynn from October 2002 to May 2003, and in 2004 he starred alongside Mila Kunis in the cinema production Tony 'n' Tina's Wedding . After guest appearances in US sitcoms, McIntyre starred Jack O'Toole in the 2008 film On Broadway alongside fellow actor Eliza Dushku . In 2011 he took on two other guest roles in both CSI: NY and Psych . He also appeared in the love comedy Happy New Year .

McIntyre made a guest appearance with the New Kids on the Block in 2008 in Til Schweiger's medieval comedy 1½ Knights - In Search of the Adorable Herzelinde .

Private life

McIntyre has been married since 2003 and lives in Los Angeles with his wife and three children. Their first son Griffin Thomas was born on November 20, 2007, their second son Rhys Edward on December 13, 2009 and their first daughter Kira Katherine on May 31, 2011. McIntyre ran for a charity project in the 2013 Boston Marathon and finished the marathon just 5 minutes before the explosions in Copley Square .
