Shuttle Inc. , founded in Taiwan in 1983 , manufactures motherboards and design barebone PCs ( XPCs ) in small form factor format. Shuttle Inc. has been a publicly traded company since 1998 .
The manufacturer divides its products into the categories Slim PC (belongs to the nettops device class ), Mini PC (the actual XPC ) and All-in-One PC . (Mostly proprietary ) accessories (e.g. monitor mounts ) are available for each of the categories .
An XPC is a compact PC which , due to its size, can often be set up on the desk or on the living room shelf . The compactness of the devices is at the expense of the expandability. For example, XPCs rarely offer more than one PCI Express slot (X16) for graphics cards and / or PCI or PCI Express (X1 / X4) slot for expansions. Furthermore, heat-intensive components, in particular the processor, have to be cooled by means of a heat pipe .
Shuttle offers its products as barebones and complete systems. Barebones are half-finished PCs that consist of a motherboard , power supply unit , cooling system and housing; Other components such as processor , memory , hard disk and (depending on the model) graphics card can be purchased as required.
In 2012, the Taiwanese manufacturer expanded its program to include network attached storage .
