She-Ra is the central character in the action figure series Princess of Power , which was distributed by Mattel from 1985 to 1987 . The series was also implemented as an animated series and radio play .

Origin and characters

The success of the action figure series Masters of the Universe prompted Mattel to expand the Masters cosmos in the hope of expanding the action figure business to include girls . The therefore female superhero She-Ra was introduced as part of the cartoon series as the twin sister of He-Man , the protagonist of the Masters of the Universe . Furthermore, the friends around She-Ra, or their cover identity Adora, were designed in a way that should appeal to girls. As a mount she had a winged unicorn .

The villain Hordak, a vassal of the Hordes (in the comic and the film The Secret of the Magic Sword "The Wild Horde") (in the original "Evil Hordes") led by the intragalactic emperor "Hordes Prime", was established as an opponent in the cartoon series . Its villain characters were not sold under the label Princess of Power , but actually represented a sideshow villain team of the Masters series. The actual enemy figure of the Princess of Power series, also sold under this label, was the feline villain Catra, who was also in the animated series was used, but only has the status of a henchman Hordak's.

action

After a costly battle against the troops of King Randor for control of Eternia, the sinister general Hordak finally has to give up. In a final act of vengeance, however, the victim kidnaps one of the royal couple's two children in order to turn the tide. Little does Hordak suspect that his docile student Skeletor has turned against him, and even before the despot can react, the traitor banishes him and the kidnapped child to another dimension. There the butcher quickly builds a new army with the help of the evil supreme being Hordes Prime and subjugates the peace-loving people of Etheria. The kidnapped girl, Adora, grows up as his ward and eventually becomes a commander in his occupying force.

Years later, the sorceress on Eternia reveals to the astonished He-Man the existence of his sister, who disappeared long ago, and the hero sets out to look for the missing woman. As a gift to Adora, the wise sorceress gives him an equivalent of his magic sword, "The Sword of Protection". When He-Man arrives in the strange world, he realizes that his sister has gone astray and kidnaps her from Hordak's fortress. He succeeds in breaking the spell that Hordak's sorceress Shadoweaver has put on the young woman and converting her back to goodness. The reunited siblings quickly realize that Adora can transform herself with her sword: "She-Ra, the princess of power" is born. - While the brother starts his journey home again, Adora / She-Ra remains from now on as leader of the newly founded rebellion on Etheria in order to free the enslaved world from the yoke of Hordak and his cronies.

Characters

The defenders of Etheria

Adora / She-Ra
The young and beautiful Adora grows up as the ward and foster daughter of the despotic dictator Hordak and serves as a commander in his army. It is only through the appearance and influence of her biological brother Adam (He-Man) that the young woman realizes the falsehood of Hordak's actions and overflows into rebellion. Equipped by He-Man with a magic sword, the inconspicuous Adora can transform herself into She-Ra, the superhumanly strong leader of the rebellion, in the fight against the Horde. However, apart from her brother and the sorceress Zoar, only the three confidants Light Hope, Madam Razz and Kowl are privy to the secret of their double identity.
Spirit / Swift wind
Spirit is the slightly fearful, speaking stallion Adoras. With the transformation of his mistress, however, he always becomes the winged and determined unicorn Swift Wind and serves her as a flying mount in battle. The transformation from Spirit to Swift-Wind is analogous to the transformation from Cringer to Battlecat in He-Man.
Light Hope
The invisible spirit of Crystal Castle, speaking to the rebels from a pillar of light. However, he only intervenes through wise advice in the course of the story and apart from that, despite his alleged omnipotence, never becomes active in the actual story process.
Bow
The archer is the only male member of the She-Ra band. The hot spur and archer is strong in combat and has various useful special arrows in his quiver, but often gets into trouble from which the heroine often has to rescue him. He is interested in She-Ra, but only sees Adora as a friend, which often throws her into conflict.
mica
She is the Guardian of Light and Princess of Bright Moon-Castle. As such, she has magical powers that allow her to hurl lightning bolts at the enemy as well as create blinding effects. She has also mastered numerous other skills. She can make herself invisible, teleport and even fly. Glimmer is one of the more popular characters in the cartoon series.
Angella
The mother of Glimmer and guardian of the embattled Bright Moon Castle is a magician and has various skills. Unlike her daughter, she wears wings on her back that allow her to soar into the air.
Castaspella
The sorceress rules the land of Mystacor. Her magic formulas give her almost unlimited possibilities. This includes, among other things, the pursuit of distant events by means of the reflections of a water basin in the throne room.

Antagonists

Hordes Prime
The dark supreme being resides in the throne room of an intergalactic warship, from where he directs his terror regime over various planets. The monstrous despot only rarely becomes active himself, but rather leaves the annoying manual work to his generals. One of these generals is Hordak, who was responsible for the planet Eternia in the past and currently occupies Etheria. To his chagrin, after failed missions against the rebellion, Hordak often has to face the draconian punishments of his liege lord.
Hordak
He is the undisputed leader of the Hordes army that occupy the planet Etheria. Above him in the hierarchy are the evil super-being Hordes Prime and his Hordes inspectors. Hordak had once failed in the attempt to conquer the world of Eternia and after a betrayal of Skeletors had to leave his headquarters at Snake Mountain and fled with his army to Etheria, where he quickly rose to dictator. He kidnapped the daughter of the Eternian ruling house, Adora, and initially raised her as his ward. Later, however, this was liberated by He-Man and now faces him as the leader of the rebellion. Hordak, a passionate and capable machine builder, has the ability to transform his body into almost any type of machine. He can also turn his arm into a destructive blaster weapon in seconds.
Catra
She is one of Hordak's most capable fighters and, after Adora has defected to the rebels, becomes the new captain of the Wild Horde. Her trademark and most powerful weapon in the fight against the great rebellion is her cat mask. She got this many years ago from Hordak, who took it from the Queen of Magic Cats after she was captured. Through this magical mask, Catra can transform into a purple panther. Her private domicile is the cat's nest and her pet is Clawdeen, a pink lion. That she is not loyal to Hordak becomes clear when she teams up with Skeletor to destroy Hordak.
