Jonathan Rasleigh Knight (born November 29, 1968 in Worcester , Massachusetts ) is an American singer . He is the oldest member of the boy group New Kids on the Block , which enjoyed worldwide success in the late 1980s and early 1990s and triggered euphoria among young women.

Life

Knight was born the second youngest of six children. The son of Canadian parents, Rev. Allan Knight and social worker Marlene Putman, grew up with two older sisters Allison and Sharon, two older brothers David and Christopher, and younger brother Jordan in Dorchester , a high- crime and drug-trafficking neighborhood of Boston . Since the mother regularly took foster children into the family, up to 20 people lived in the house at times.

Knight, whose parents divorced during his teenage years , first attended Roxbury School in Boston and later moved to Thayer Academy , a private high school . As a child he sang in the school and church choir and was taught classical ballet . Together with his brother Jordan, he took part in special training courses for boys with musical talent offered by the Royal School of Church Music at Princeton University in Boston .

Knight, who originally wanted to be an architect , became the oldest member of the boy band New Kids on The Block in 1984 at the age of 15 . Before they split up in 1994, he left the group for health reasons and withdrew completely from show business. He settled in Essex , Massachusetts, and worked as a real estate agent in the years that followed . Knight is openly gay.

In 2008, Knight made a public return as part of the New Kids on the Block reunion.
