occupation

New Kids is a Dutch television series that was broadcast on the Dutch television channel 101 TV and has been shown on Comedy Central since 2009 . During the first two seasons, the series ran under the name New Kids on the Block , which can only be seen on the Internet and in Dutch. In Germany, the series was first broadcast on June 3, 2010 on Comedy Central . After two movies, called New Kids Turbo (2010) and New Kids Nitro (2011), the makers announced the end of the series in March 2012.

The subject of the series is the everyday life of a clique of five men from an educationally disadvantaged background and living in precarious circumstances. As fictional characters, they embody many common prejudices that are associated with lower-class milieus, especially clichés that are associated with the classicist term “ proll ”.

The main actors in the series are five loiterers in the village of Maaskantje , a district of the municipality of Sint-Michielsgestel in the Dutch province of North Brabant . Most of the action takes place in the neighboring town of Den Dungen .

background

The series was written by Steffen Haars and Flip van der Kuil, who also directed. They also play the roles of Robbie and Barrie themselves .

The first season was shot in December 2007. The first seven episodes were viewed more than 2.5 million times on the Internet. As a result, “New Kids” was the first program to be broadcast on 101 TV, Channel BNN's digital youth channel .

Different channels recognized the potential of the series. Since September 25, 2009 Comedy Central broadcast new episodes of the series, which significantly increased its popularity in the Netherlands and Belgium . The series is also broadcast abroad (including Sweden ).

For the fourth season, the broadcast of 14 new episodes with a length of 20 minutes each was planned, which should be broadcast in spring 2011. Instead, the movie New Kids Turbo was shot, which was first released in the Netherlands on December 9, 2010.

action

Cafetaria 't Pleintje in Den Dungen, the new kids' favorite snack bar

The series does not have a continuing storyline, but begins in different places with each episode. The usual meeting point is a parking lot, the park or a snack stand . In most of the episodes the men meet at one of the locations, but there are also episodes in which only individuals from the group play.

Although the village Maaskantje is named as the setting in the series, most of the scenes are shot in the neighboring village of Den Dungen . The main characters are the group of five young men named Richard, Gerrie, Rikkert, Robbie and Barrie. They usually behave very primitively and ruthlessly. They wear clothes (tracksuit, polo shirt, flip-flops) from the 1990s and drink excessively canned beer from the cheap brand Schultenbräu . The individual episodes deal with how they deal with seemingly everyday, but sometimes exaggerated situations in an extremely banal way. In the series there is a primitive, vulgar language that is peppered with insults and swear words ("pussy", "homo", "cunt", "crazy Mongo", "Fickschnitzel" etc.). In some episodes there are also violent confrontations with others.

main characters

  • Richard Batsbak, 27 years old - Richard is the leader and also the brightest of the group, has a black belt in Taekwondo and works with Robbie for the Parks Department . He is wearing a blonde mullet , a white shirt and purple sweatpants.
  • Gerrie van Boven, 23 years old - Gerrie is the daredevil of the group, even if he mostly fails with it. For example, in the following supermarket , when he betrayed his friends to the shop detective after attempting shoplifting. He works as a forklift driver in the warehouse of an electronics shipping company and is also responsible for the deaths of several people in the course of the series, for example in the episode Pistol , when he accidentally shot Cop Adrie with his service weapon. Usually he is to be found in a green jersey of the local soccer club from Maaskantje (actually this is an older jersey of the RKVV Den Dungen ) and in a gray leather jacket.
  • Rikkert Biemans, 26 years old - Rikkert works as a mechanic and is otherwise a car fanatic, because his green Opel Manta means everything to him. Although he has been a virgin for a long time and is initially mocked by his friends for this, an interest in Manuela is often indicated, as becomes clear in the episodes Supermarket and Virgo . In the movie New Kids Turbo Manuela is his girlfriend and he has sex with her at the end of the film, in the follow-up New Kids Nitro he falls in love with Deborah from the warring neighboring town of Schijndel .
  • Robbie Schuurmans, 26 years old - Robbie works with Richard for the Parks Department and also lives in a trailer.
  • Barrie Butsers, 27 - Barrie rarely speaks, but is the strongest of the group and is respected by his friends. He drives a pink Gilera Citta and always wears a black track jacket, flip-flops and a large silver necklace. He is also the only one in the group who does not have a regular job but lives on social assistance .
  • Manuela van Grunsven - Manuela is heavily pregnant, but still drinks plenty of alcohol and is already a single mother of two children named Nikky and Denny. She works as a cashier in the supermarket and is Rikkert's friend in the series and film New Kids Turbo. However, it does not appear in the successor New Kids Nitro.

Supporting characters

  • Danny - Danny (played by Peter Vernhout ) was the sixth member of the New Kids in the first two seasons, which only appeared in Dutch. His character was dropped for the televised third season. Peter Vernhout, however, took on a few supporting roles this season.
  • Henk 'Snackbar' van Boven - Henk (played by Ruud Matthijssen ) is the snack bar at Cafetaria “t Pleintje” . He is grumpy and quick-tempered in character. In the film New Kids Turbo , during the Battle of Maaskantje, he reveals that he is Gerrie's father. He also hates Friesland and their incomprehensible dialect, which becomes clear in the film New Kids Nitro . In the invasion of the zombies in Friesland in the said film, where he supports the New Kids, he dies.
  • D'n Dave - D'n Dave (played by Guido Pollemans ) is a rival for the New Kids and appears in the two films. In New Kids Turbo he is Manuela's lover for a short time, in New Kids Nitro he takes on a bigger role as the leader of the hooligan group from Schijndel , where he comes from. During the zombie invasion in Friesland, however, he helped the New Kids after Richard found out that his father was from Schijndel. In the end he is shot by Rikkert.
  • Knoet - Knoet (played by Sjaak-Pieter van Es ) also comes from Schijndel like D'n Dave and appears in New Kids Nitro . He only attracts attention in their clique through slogans and insults against the new kids. He is killed in the zombie invasion in Friesland when he is "sacrificed" to the zombies by D'n Dave.
  • Deborah - Deborah (played by Juliette van Ardenne ) is the friend of D'n Dave in the film New Kids Nitro , then later briefly Rikkert. Like Manuela, she is heavily pregnant, but still consumes alcohol.
  • Adrie - Adrie (played by Bart de Rijk ) is an incompetent and clumsy police officer from Maaskantje, who is therefore suspended from duty more than once. Dangerous situations are solved incorrectly or not even considered, and he regularly causes damage to his company car through rear-end collisions. He can be easily targeted several times by the New Kids. In both the series and the film New Kids Nitro he dies - in Gerrie's series with a shot from his service weapon and in the film he accidentally blows himself up in Friesland with a load of fireworks when he is in front of the New Kids wanted to save attacking zombies.
  • The "head-shaking" grandpa - The grandpa (played by Adrie Bolwerk , the grandfather of Tim Haars and Steffen Haars ) is a running gag in the series and in the films. He appears in some places where the new kids are and stand out because of their behavior and is not at all enthusiastic about them, so that he only shakes his head annoyed and silently.
  • Joost van Gaalen - van Gaalen (played by the actor of the same name ) is a friend of the New Kids and only appeared in the series in the Strand episode . Otherwise he will only be mentioned a few times in conversations. In real life he is the cousin of leading actor Wesley van Gaalen.
  • Danny and Nicky - Danny (played by Samuel Both ) and Nicky (played by Djim Leenheers ) are Manuela's children.
  • The “redhead” - The redhead (played by Lars Boekhorst ) is a boy who suffers from Down's syndrome and is seen as dangerous by the New Kids, although he doesn't act like that, which is why they call him Mongo . In the films he appears as a running gag and has a significant role in the winning missions of the New Kids. His trademark is the saying "Truck driver - do-do!", For which he always makes a gesture with his arm like pulling a cable horn.
  • Peter Vernhout - Peter Vernhout (played by Daan van Dijsseldonk and named after the actor of the same name from the series) is a reporter for the fictional television channel TV Brabant in the two films , although he plays a larger role in New Kids Turbo. In the second film, too, he reports on the zombie invasion in Friesland, where he also interviews a Frisian-speaking farmer. He is later killed by a zombie.
  • Ronnie - Ronnie (played by Max van den Burg ) is a good friend of the New Kids in New Kids Nitro and of Richard's mother Corry. He is a more or less talented singer, but commercially successful and can be seen as a parody of the German singer Dennie Christian , who is very well known in the Netherlands . At Corry Batsbak's funeral, he reveals the secret of Richard's father, that he came from Schijndel.
  • Corry Batsbak - Corry Batsbak (played by Juul Vrijdag ) is the mother of Richard. She only appears in New Kids Nitro , where she lives in a trailer and still smokes and consumes alcohol despite health problems. Richard sends her to Ameland Island to protect her from D'n Dave , where she is surprised by the zombie invasion and becomes a zombie herself. Richard cuts off her head during the fight and later has only the rest of her torso buried.
  • Gradje - Gradje is Richard's dog. He only appeared in New Kids Turbo and was first shot by the police during the Maaskantje raid and then later beaten to death by Richard with a sofa to relieve him of his suffering.
  • The disabled mechanic - In both films he works with Rikkert in the auto repair shop and is mentally and physically disabled and therefore often makes mistakes. In New Kids Nitro , Rikkert only calls him “cunt”, which is why you never get his name.
  • The Gun Fool - The Gun Fool (played by Ad van Kempen ) only appears in New Kids Turbo . The new kids get the weapons for the battle of Maaskantje from him . He seems to be a supporter of National Socialism , because there are flags with swastikas on the wall in his barn .
  • Man at a bus stop - A man (played by Herman Otten ) who is waiting at a bus stop in the episode Bus Stop (third season).
  • Robert - Robert (played by Jules Seegers ) is a person from the third season.
  • Son - A son (played by Aivin Gast ) in the episode A beautiful car and also briefly in Pinjata (first season).
  • Jordy Bernal - (played by Jordy Bernal ) in New Kids Turbo .
